Dental Spotlight: Partha Mukherji, DDS

Partha Mukherji, DDS

Where did you grow-up and what is special about your hometown?

I grew up in Bay City, TX, a small town right outside of Houston. Bay City is special because it is a close-knit community. With one high school, and one movie theater, and one big community park, Bay City was conducive to what I presume were the “good old days.” We said hi to each other, everyone knew each other, you can have your windows and doors unlocked and be neighborly. Bay City was also 35 minutes from Matagorda Beach and that allowed for a nice escape from time to time for some quality nature time.

Why did you decide to become a dentist?

My hometown orthodontist, dentist, and my sister (also a DDS) had a big influence on me. I always wanted to be either a trauma surgeon or psychiatrist, because I knew with my height and athletic skills going to the NBA would not be an option. lol Dentistry offered something unique similar to few other medical practices: long term relationships with patients. I observed how my hometown orthodontist or general dentist would tell me how their patients would bring in their kids, and their kids’ kids, etc. Furthermore, the ability to really change someone’s smile, self-esteem, relieve them of pain, and ultimately be able to influence a part of life is something that really intrigued me about dentistry. I also liked the surgical component of dentistry. That satiated my desire to be able to perform surgery. 

Where did you go to dental school and when did you graduate?

I went to Texas A&M (Baylor) College of Dentistry, and graduated in 2001

Who was your mentor?

I would have to say professionally my two mentors are my sister, and Dr. Majid Sehat (Arlington, TX) My sister is one of my best friends, my guardian angel, and colleagues. There is no way I would be where I am in my personal and professional life without her. I started working with Dr. Sehat when I first moved to the Fort Worth area in 2007. I was inspired by his love to always learn and take CE. The way he is with his patients, the surgical skills he possesses, etc…really helped shape me to become a better dentist.

What is your favorite dental instrument? Why?

I’d have to say my implant handpiece and surgical set up. It’s fun to be able to pick up a titanium screw (implant) and surgically place it into bone.

How do you like to relax?

I like to spend time with my little dog Biggy Smallz, gym, music, photography…and if by miracle’s chance: travel.

What do you consider to be your greatest achievement?

Honestly, I don’t know. Maybe it’s yet to come. Rhetorically speaking, I think everyday I am grateful with a goal of achieving something either through service, and mentorship.

What is the biggest change in dentistry since you graduated?

The technology and expenses that come along with it (CBCT, intraoral scanner, 3-D printers)

What is the biggest challenge facing dentistry?

Dental economics.

What is the best advice you’ve received for your career?

Always learn, serve, and have integrity.

How do you make practicing dentistry fun?

I just try to be me: laid back, and be very conversational with my patients. When patients open up and are relaxed, it makes dentistry fun. Same applies for having that mentality with your dental team.

What advice would you share with someone looking to purchase their first practice?

Explore all options, and make sure you are committed to the business as well as clinical side of things. Be involved with the community. Location, location, location….and just do what is right.
